Chojnice
2004 |
Chojnice is a town with a
remarkable history. The first information about the town can be found in
the historic resource from the 13th century. The Pomeranian Dukes received
the municipal right for Chojnice in the second half of the 13th century.
In 1309 Chojnice and Pomerania were conquered by the Teutonic Knights.
During the polish-Teutonic war (1409-1410) Chojnice several times became
Polish or Teutonic gain and finally it remained in Teutonic hands. In 1454
the town was the place of the battle in which Polish army was defeated. In
1466 came back to Poland and the age of economic growth of the city began.
The prosperity was stopped by the wars of 17th century. As the result of
the First partition of Poland, Chojnice was joined to the Kingdom of
Prussia. In 1920, after 148 years of captivity, Chojnice became Polish. As
the border town it witnessed dynamic development. The outbreak of the
Second World War stopped the town's economic growth. The town suffered
heavily during the war, but soon after the liberation the economical,
cultural and educational life started again.
Nowadays, Chojnice is a town of
40000 inhabitants. It is the centre of economics, administration, service,
trade and culture. The area is famous for its natural heritage. In 1996,
in the largest forest complex in Poland, the "Bory Tucholskie", a National
Park has been established. It constitutes the most precious part of the
Zaborski Landscape Park, the jewel of which is the Brda River, also called
the queen of lowland rivers, and its tributary, the Zbrzyca River. The
authorities of the Landscape Park are also responsible for the Stone
Circles (Kregi Kamienne) archeological reserve in Odry. Chojnice has a lot
to offer to fens of active recreation, especially to sailors. The Chojnice
Sailors Club has a marina with a pier, hangars, and boat building
workshop. Established in 1922, it is the oldest Sailors' Club in Poland.
Amateur enthusiasts of water sports know well the attractions of the
Chojnice Water Park. Apart from the Olympic size swimming pool, it has a
three-spiral slide, Jacuzzi, an artificial river and geysers.
Chojnice has lots to offer to
history lovers, as well. Major attractions include the remains of medieval
fortifications; the Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, built
of red bricks on the granite foundations in the Pomeranian Gothic style,
which in 1993 became a smaller basilica; the late-Baroque Jesuit
Church of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary; a neogothic town hall; and the
interesting layout of the Old Town, which has recently been modernized and
adorned with a fountain that includes a lighted stream with varying of
colors and types of light and water streams. Other landmarks include an
old riverside sawmill in Chocimski Mlyn, water mills in Czernica and
Koszuba, historic manor houses, and wayside shrines scattered across the
Chojnice Region. |

Years ago a polish chronicler
Jan Dlugosz described Chojnice as
"the key and the gate to
Pomerania".
1 am very happy that this year
the gate welcomes participants of European RS Club Cup. It is an honour
for Chojnice to host such event.
As the organizers of the event
we have done as much as
possible in order to make the competition really interesting
and intense at the same time. We hope that all participants will be
favourably impressed by our land and leave us after the event with the feeling
of joy and satisfaction. |
